Summary

Driven by the manipulative will of an imprisoned dragon, Kresdin and Fuke are pushed to retrieve an ancient magical tablet long lost in an outlying region. The companions, joined by new friends with stunning skills, must journey across the sea and trek into the scalding desert.
Relying on deception and secrecy, their dealings intertwine with the underworld element that rules the distant city. Danger rises as the mismatched group is thrown into a devious plot with treacherous adversaries eager to assassinate anyone standing in the way. Far from home and out of their element, the heroes are plunged into a deadly struggle for power.

My thoughts

I discovered this hidden gem of a series not long ago and I’m glad to report that book two was just as brilliant as the first book!

“Hasty actions at the expense of your own safety make it all pointless.”

With some new and returning characters this is such a loveable cast and another delightful book to add to this series. With the book focussing on a larger mystery at play, our characters must band together and work out what is going on. Joining together they face the highs and lows of travelling in a dangerous city with dangerous people working against them. This book isn’t all serious, there is plenty of opportunity for humour and bonding and I really loved every page of this story.

“Oh, he’s growing on me too.” Halbrind turned out a sour face. “Growing on me like a severed limb.”

Kresdin’s instinct for kindness and respect is a trait I really appreciate in him, and although he may at times border on naivety, he does also have a self awareness of it. He’s open when he makes mistakes, he understands the risks that he takes and he considers the angles before acting. I really love Kresdin and the way he tries to see the positive in the people around him. He has come into himself and his new power but it hasn’t changed who he is on the inside and that is a great quality to have.

“Just remember there are solutions that don’t require such extreme measures. When violence equates justice, you always run the risk of devolving into the malice you seek to disrupt.”

This book is filled with humour and wacky magic that really made me laugh at loud throughout this story.

“Things accepted as known are not always true.”

“I was close enough to observe your happiness but never able to be a part of it.”

Would I recommend?

Yes again, I really love this series. It’s a perfect blend of comfort, loveable characters, drama and action. Book three is on my Kindle ready to go!
