Reading Goals for 2025
My reading goals for the year ahead!
The Starless Sea – Erin Morgenstern
Zachary Ezra Rawlins, a Vermont graduate student, discovers a mysterious book that recounts a childhood memory. This revelation leads him to hidden libraries, secret societies, and a magical underwater world. While opinions on “The Starless Sea” vary, I find it to be a captivating exploration of love, loss, and the power of storytelling.
The Bone Season Books 1-4 – Samantha Shannon
The year is 2059. For two centuries, the Republic of Scion has led an oppressive campaign against unnaturalness in Europe.
Here are my thoughts on the first four books of this series, in anticipation of book five releasing in February 2025.
Please Look After Mother – Kyung-Sook Shin
“Please Look After Mother” by Shin Kyung-sook tells the story of a family’s emotional turmoil after the disappearance of their mother, So-nyo. Through the children’s perspectives, the novel explores themes of familial love, guilt, and introspection, revealing deep-seated memories and unexpressed feelings about their mother’s sacrifices and dreams.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue – V.E. Schwab
In France, 1714, Addie LaRue makes a Faustian bargain for immortality but ends up cursed to be forgotten. Her solitary journey spans centuries, exploring themes of loss, remembrance and human connection. However, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name…
Of Jade and Dragons – Amber Chen
Eighteen-year-old Ying aspires to be an engineer like her father, but his murder disrupts her life. Disguised as her brother, she infiltrates the Engineers Guild, seeking answers. However, her immature behaviour, the lack of actual engineering and an instant love trope hinder her journey and lead to a disappointing narrative.
The Shadow of the Gods – John Gwynne
In a land of fallen of gods, three protagonists—a huntress, a rebellious noblewoman, and a vengeful thrall—navigate a world of power struggles and mystical creatures. The novel features profound character development, intricate politics, and explores dark themes while delivering an engaging narrative, making it a highly recommended epic fantasy.
I Who Have Never Known Men – Jacqueline Harpman
Deep underground, thirty-nine women live imprisoned in a cage, until one day they are led to escape by the youngest amongst the group. This book explores themes of female relationships, isolation, and resilience amid a haunting, post-apocalyptic landscape, leaving readers contemplating the human experience and hope.
