Book haul alert!

Posted on April 11, 2025 by April

Do you ever take a spontaneous trip to Waterstones just to browse, see what’s there, maybe get an idea for your next read but its just window shopping, you’re not meant to buy anything.. Well here’s what I bought from Waterstones!

Mordew – Alex Pheby

Fantasy/ Gothic/ Adult/ Sci-fi

627 pages

This is the start of a trilogy and I love the covers of this series. I haven’t heard a thing about this book and picked it up purely from the cover alone. Described as a dark and ambitious fantasy with a unique and unsettling world.

In a city where God is dead and hidden beneath the catacombs, Nathan Treeves, a young boy living in poverty, is sold by his mother to the Master of Mordew, who derives power from God’s corpse. Despite his fear and low status, Nathan possesses a strength greater than the Master’s, which he must learn to harness to challenge the Master and navigate the treacherous landscape of betrayal and dark secrets in the aftermath of God’s death.

Kings of the Wyld – Nicholas Eames

High fantasy/ Adult/ Humour

502 pages

This is not a traditional trilogy. Each book acts as a standalone around different characters, however there is an overarching storyline across the three books.

I picked this up again – for the cover! I’m also a huge fan of high/ epic fantasy so I tend to gravitate to those shelves. This book promises an exciting fantasy with a healthy dose of humour. I’ve heard mumblings from others that have read this and I’ve only heard positive things. A band of legendary (and slightly past-their-prime) mercenaries reuniting for one last glorious quest? Sounds like exactly the kind of adventure I need!

Clay Cooper and his former mercenary band, now old and out of shape, receive a call for help from an ex-member. His daughter Rose is trapped in a city under siege, facing a massive enemy. Rescuing her is a dangerous task, prompting the band to reunite for one final mission across the Wyld.

Sandman Slim – Richard Kadrey

Urban fantasy/ Supernatural

388 pages

This was recommended to me by one of the assistants. He noticed my struggling to pick a book and instead gave me a highly praised recommendation that I ended up buying another book.. no regrets. My experience of urban fantasy is pretty limited to The Bone Season but I really enjoy that series so I’m keen to read more in this series.

This book has not appeared anywhere on my feed and I do love finding hidden gems so I’m glad for the recommendation. A dark, urban fantasy series with a gritty protagonist and a unique take on angels and demons. I’ve heard it’s a wild and action-packed ride, and I’m looking forward to diving into its supernatural noir atmosphere.

James Stark, a former hitman who spent eleven years in Hell, escapes to a chaotic Los Angeles, seeking revenge, absolution, and possibly love. However, his journey becomes more complicated with the arrival of an abusive talking head, revealing that both Heaven and Hell have conflicting plans for his future.

Book unhaul update!

I recently went through my shelves and done a bit of an unhaul of the books I didn’t love as much as I thought or ones I just won’t pick up to read again.

My goal has always been to have my shelves filled with my four and five star reads. The ones I pick up again and again and always recommend or lend out. So here is what I passed on to others to love more than I do;

Yellowface – Rebecca Kuang

Some may be shocked by this but I sold on my signed first edition copy of Yellowface. I really struggled with this book and only got halfway before I had to put it down. This book isn’t for me but I know it’s widely loved so hopefully the new owner is happy!

Belladonna trilogy – Adalyn Grace

I sold on my hardcopies of this trilogy, including the hidden cover for Belladonna and the Waterstones signed special edition of Wisteria. I absolutely loved the first book, but each book after just fell flat and felt forced to me. I’m also still rather annoyed with the ultimate ending. I’ve kept hold of my paperback copy of Belladonna and I’ll hold onto that one but I feel okay letting the rest go.

Our Infinite Fates – Laura Steven

No shocker here, if you keep up with my reviews you’ll know this is the first and only one star review I’ve given. I did not get what I was promised with this one and the closer to the ending the sillier things got. I sold on my Waterstones special edition and hopefully the new owner loves this book where I couldn’t.
