January Reading Wrap Up!

Posted on February 2, 2025 by April

What were my highlights?

The Master of Djinn was my hidden gem this month. I expected a murder mystery in a science fiction land of an ancient Egypt. What I did not expect was a fantastically written female lead, a beautifully written relationship with her girlfriend, a complex political landscape that relates so well to modern day (not always for the good). The themes of this book were written with artistry and although, at times, you could see the obvious clues behind the perpetrator, I did not care in the slightest. Also.. steampunk?! That was a great book.

My favourite read this month?

Definitely, The Dark Mirror. This book was filled with anxiety, stress, hope and a teensy bit of the most romantic moments that my heart needed to compensate for everything else this book put me through. Samantha Shannon loves to put her characters through the wringer and make her readers emotional wrecks in the process.

TBR update

I read 5 books on my tbr! That is a success. Plus another ARC that an author kindly gave me, which meant I got to check out a new author – another success! 134 books on my shelf left… I have not bought any so I’m taking that as an overall win.

Upcoming..

I have my first book from The Broken Bonding’s subscription coming in Feb which I’m super excited about! As well as a pre-order of Samantha Shannon’s book. I have already read my first book of Feb so I’m hoping for another month of quiet time and good books!

Discussion

What was your favourite read this month, or how well are you doing against your goals, if you have any? I want to make another dent in my tbr going into Feb. The flipside is that I have three pre-orders this month so will my tbr go up or down.. stay tuned for next month!

Let me know what you read this month

It took me the entire month to read Wind and Truth, but I enjoyed it.

I’m definitely going to start Mistborn this year! They are quite chunky, I’m going to need more time!
